Union Awards

The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) has two categories of awards:
• self-nominating, whereby candidates send in their own applications
• by nomination, either by the Union Awards Committee or other Constituent Members

The Awards are always presented during the Union Annual World Conference on Lung Health.


Self-nominating category
TWO PRIZES OF US $2000.00

A Scientific Prize
A Scientific Prize is awarded to a young researcher (under 45 years of age) for his/her work on tuberculosis or non-tuberculous lung disease published in the last 2 years. One copy of the publication should be sent to the Secretariat with the candidate's application.

Candidates who would like to participate in the 2008 contest should send their application, electronic version only, by e-mail to The Union Secretariat by 31 July 2008 : communications@iuatld.org

The 2007 Scientific Prize was awarded to Dr Madhukar Pai, MD, PhD, from India. Dr Pai is currently working in Canada as an assistant professor of epidemiology at McGill University.



A Public Health Prize
The Karel Styblo Prize is awarded to a health worker (physician or lay person) for his/her contribution to tuberculosis control or non-tuberculous lung disease. Applicants should include a well-documented description of his/her work, together with the comments of the manager of the association or programme. Applications, including a full curriculum vitae, should be sent by the candidates to the Secretariat in Paris 3 months before the World Conference.

The 2007 Public Health Prize was awarded to Lucy Chesire from Kenya for her work in TB advocacy over the past decade. A clinical nutritionist from Eldoret, Kenya, Lucy Chesire was 20 years old when she was diagnosed with HIV.




The Stop TB Partnership Kochon Prize


A new prestigious international health prize was launched in 2006 by the Stop TB Partnership and the Kochon Foundation.

The 2007 prize, awarded during the 38th Union World Conference on Lung Health, was shared by two recipients:

Mr Faruque Ahmed on behalf of BRAC (Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee), which began a community-based TB control project in 1984 in one sub-district and has now expanded to 283 sub-districts in 42 districts.

Prof Zhao Fengzeng and Dr Wang Longde on behalf of the Ministry of Health, People’s Republic of China. The MOH has made remarkable achievements in the implementation and expansion on TB control reaching full population coverage.

Nomination category

Honorary Member
The title of Honorary Member of the Union is granted to a person who has distinguished him/herself in active participation in the Union's activities and fulfilment of its goals. Union Constituent Members can nominate likely candidates 3 months before the World Conference.

In 2007, three honorary memberships were awarded:

  • Prof Martin Gninafon, Manager of the National TB Progamme, Benin
  • Dr Daniel S. Nyangulu, Adviser of the National Tuberculosis Control Programme, Malawi
  • Dr Abolhassan Zia Zarifi, Scientific Consultant and Head of the Mycobacteriology Unit of the National Research Institute of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, Iran

The Union Medal
The Union Medal is awarded to those members who have made an outstanding contribution to the control of tuberculosis or non-tuberculous lung disease, by their scientific work and/or actions in the field.

In 2007, no Union medal was awarded.

The Princess Chichibu Memorial TB Global Award
The annual Princess Chichibu Memorial TB Global Award of US$10,000 is given to a person who has shown great achievements in anti-tuberculosis activities, irrespective of his/her nationality. Recommended by the Awards Committee of the Union, a candidate is nominated and finalised by the Japan Anti-Tuberculosis Association (JATA). The prize is presented during the Union World Conference by the President of JATA.

In 2007, the Princess Chichibu Memorial TB Global Award was awarded to Dr Jaap F Broekmans, MD, MPH from the Netherlands for his distinguished career of more than 30 years in tuberculosis control. Dr Broekmans served as Executive Director of the Royal Netherlands Tuberculosis Foundation (KNCV) from 1987 to 2005.
